Automatic updates are built in. Install once, enable auto-updates on the WordPress Plugins screen, and new releases arrive on their own.

Rythzen Backup produces a single archive containing your database and your files, with a manifest describing exactly what it holds and which WordPress and PHP version produced it.

Restore is built in — you are not left with a zip and a problem. Remote storage is optional, and the plugin works entirely offline if you would rather keep archives on the server.

Installing Rythzen Backup

1. Download the zip from this page.
2. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and choose the file.
3. Activate, then open Rythzen Backup and take one manual backup before scheduling anything.
4. Download that archive and confirm it opens.

A backup you have never opened is not a backup.

Fixed: WordPress's own "Check again" on the Updates screen now bypasses the plugin's
six-hour metadata cache, so a freshly published release shows up immediately.

Added: self-hosted automatic updates through the new Rythzen update service.
Added: an Updates tab showing the installed and latest version, release channel and last check.
Security: backup archives now carry an unguessable token in their filename. Previously the name
was entirely predictable, and on nginx — where the .htaccess guard is ignored — anyone who
guessed a timestamp could download the full site and its database.
Fixed: the database export paged through tables without an ORDER BY, so rows could be duplicated
or silently skipped. Exports are now ordered by primary key.
Fixed: binary and BLOB columns were written as if they were text and came back corrupted on
restore. They are now written as hex literals.
Fixed: large sites could fail with "too many open files" because every file stayed open until the
archive was closed. The archive is now flushed in batches.
Fixed: the archive manifest was written twice.
Added: the Diagnostics tab now says plainly when OpenSSL is unavailable and stored cloud
credentials are therefore only encoded, not encrypted.

Can someone download my backup by guessing the URL?

No. Every archive name ends in a random token and the directory refuses listing and direct access — a request for a plausible-looking filename returns 403.

Can it restore, or only back up?

It restores — database, files, or both, from the archive list. Take one manual backup, download it, and confirm it opens before you rely on any schedule. A backup you have never opened is not a backup.

Where can remote copies go?

Google Drive, S3-compatible storage, Dropbox, OneDrive, FTP/FTPS/SFTP and WebDAV. Remote storage is optional; the plugin works entirely on the server if you prefer.

Will a large site time out mid-backup?

The archive is written in chunks across requests rather than in one pass, so a shared host with a short execution limit can still finish. Very large media libraries are the practical limit — use a files-only archive plus a separate database schedule.
